If you grew up outside Asia, or your family did these things without ever saying why, this is where we write it down. Where there is a source, we cite it. Where we could not verify something, we say so — and where a Chinese source says something we could not confirm, we leave it out rather than repeat it.

Most people looking this up are not shopping. They have a specific dead person in mind and no idea what they are supposed to do. That is a reasonable position to be in, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales page.
If you end up doing it yourself, that is the better outcome. What we do is for the people who cannot.
