First grave visit: what to bring
Pack practical supplies, agree on offerings with your family, and check the cemetery before travelling.
Pack cleaning tools, water, a rubbish bag and suitable footwear. Ask your family about flowers, food, incense and paper offerings, and check whether the venue permits burning before packing fire-lighting supplies.
Three things to confirm first
- The exact cemetery or columbarium, its opening hours and transport arrangements.
- Who is leading the visit and which family practices to follow.
- Meeting points, transport and any medication or rest needs.
Practical supplies
- Cleaning: gloves, small tools and a rubbish bag.
- For yourself: drinking water, suitable shoes, weather protection and any medication.
- Contact: a charged phone, power bank and meeting details.
This is our packing advice. Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) also advises using tools to clear vegetation and taking rubbish away.
Offerings: ask the family
Confirm food, flowers, tea, incense, candles and paper with the person leading the visit. Hong Kong Memory’s clan account records examples; it is not a checklist every household must copy.
At our shop: we use three incense sticks and hand-fold the gold and silver paper. That describes our work, not a universal ritual requirement.

Check fire and venue rules
AFCD’s 2026 reminder covers clearing vegetation without fire, containing burning in a suitable burner or metal container, and extinguishing fire before leaving. Follow any stricter venue restrictions. A lighter is not essential at a venue that prohibits burning.
Dates and transport
| Occasion | Hong Kong date |
|---|---|
| Chung Yeung 2026 | 18 October, lunar 9/9; public holiday 19 October. |
| Qingming 2027 | 5 April; public holiday. |
Hong Kong dates, UTC+8. Calendar and public-holiday sources are linked below.
For the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries, check the operator’s 2026 Chung Yeung arrangements; other venues have their own notices.
If something is missing
Address water, medication and safety needs first. Ask the family how to adjust any ritual items. Customs elsewhere do not establish what counts for your family.
Sources and scope
Compiled by Shen Po Son. Practical suggestions are labelled above; a source describing one community is not a rule for every family. Checked 15 October 2026.
If this would help
