What does the Chinese word for a death anniversary mean?

忌日 and 忌辰 refer here to the day of a person’s death, remembered on its anniversary. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary entry for 忌日 records the death-day meaning and lists 忌辰 as another name. That definition does not prescribe the size of an observance or a shopping list.

Start by asking which date your family keeps and whether a relative, temple or funeral adviser has already arranged anything. The suggestions below are for planning your part, rather than replacing those arrangements.

What is actually done on a death anniversary?

If you want a simple way to remember someone at home, these are options to discuss with your family. The quantities here are suggestions, not ritual requirements.

• Record the agreed date. Write down whether it is lunar or Gregorian. If it is lunar, check its Gregorian equivalent each year before setting a reminder.
• Prepare a dish they liked. You could place it by a photograph if that fits your family’s practice.
• Pour tea or another drink. Choose what feels appropriate to you and your family.
• Consider incense. First check whether your home permits it and whether it belongs in your observance.
• Consider joss paper. If your family uses it, decide where it can be handled; you do not have to arrange burning to use the other suggestions.
• Say a few words or share a memory. This can be your own contribution, wherever you live.

The death day, or the birthday?

Keep the two dates separate. 死忌 refers to the death anniversary; 生忌 refers to the deceased person’s birthday. See the dictionary entries for 忌日 and 生忌.

Ask which occasion your family intends to keep before choosing a date. Do not substitute a birthday for a death anniversary simply because it is easier to remember.

What about the first anniversary and the hundred days?

There are reliable definitions for these terms. The Ministry of Education’s Taiwanese Hokkien dictionary explains 百日 as the hundred-day observance after a death, and 對年 as the completion of a year after death, with an anniversary ceremony.

Is the anniversary kept on the lunar or the Western date?

For planning, record the calendar your family has chosen. If you only have one date and are unsure which calendar it uses, check with the person who recorded it before converting it. The Hong Kong Observatory’s Gregorian–lunar conversion tables let you look up the corresponding date; they do not decide which calendar your family should follow.

A useful note has three parts: the original date and calendar, the Gregorian date for this year, and the place or time zone of the arrangement. If a lunar leap month is involved, flag it when asking for confirmation.

What if the anniversary has already passed?

Contact the family or person arranging the observance and ask whether to choose another day or join an existing arrangement. While you decide, you can still use the personal remembrance suggestions above.

We do not have a verified rule that makes a late death-anniversary rite equivalent to one on the agreed date. Flexible dates for Qingming or another festival would not settle that question. If a particular rite matters to your family, confirm it with the person conducting it.

How do you mark a death anniversary from abroad?

Separate what you plan to do at home from any burning arranged in Hong Kong. For burning through our shop, specify the intended Hong Kong date (UTC+8); do not assume that your local anniversary date will be interpreted as a confirmed booking.
